CURTAINS and BLINDS

CHOOSING YOUR FABRIC
Different fabric types have different characteristics.  For example 100% polyester fabrics have a tendency to flare out at the bottom. Silk by nature is a delicate fabric and prone to fading and sunlight damage so these curtains must be interlined. Fabrics containing cotton, rayon or viscose may crease more easily than polyester but is in no way considered a flaw. Linens can have a slightly more creased appearance and this is natural. Fabric is not paper it moves and drapes in certain ways so be realistic about what it can do. Not all fabric is suitable for blinds and sometimes only best result can be achieved. The creases in linen curtains and blinds, voile curtains and soft drape fabrics should be viewed as an integral part of their look, expected to increase over time with use.

FADING AND COLOUR FASTNESS
All fabrics will fade if subjected to high levels of direct sunlight or indirect (reflected UV) sunlight. So care must be taken to protect furnishing fabrics through the use of correct lining and the use of roller blinds/sheers where necessary.  It is important to note that no fabric is 100% colour fast and that it is impossible to prevent colours fading if adequate precautions are not taken. Constant exposure of the sun will break down fabric fibres causing them to become brittle.  With roman blinds fading may occur along the folds.

SHRINKAGE
All fabrics are prone to shrinkage and it is important that sufficient allowances are made.  An allowance of 3% to 5% is accepted as an industry standard.

MOVEMENT OF CURTAINS IN SITU
Fabric is a woven material and regardless of composition as such is subject to relaxing or contracting. Top quality curtain makers avoid ‘exact’ length curtains (ie floor touching or window sill) and it is always recommended to have curtains breaking on floor better to disguise these natural changes.
Allowance must be made for atmospheric movement and fluctuations in length as the result in changes in temperature and humidity.  Fabrics absorb moisture and this can result in stretching or shrinking.  It is reasonable to expect as much as a 3% - 5%  change in any curtain length. Cellulosic yarns, such as viscose or rayon, may shrink or relax and lengthen.
The nature of the fabric can also affect movement.  Heavier fabrics, loose weaves and those of thicker yarns of natural fabrics will react to changing humidity.  Interlining is often made of cotton and is therefore prone to shrink back within the curtain causing the outer curtain to sag slightly at different times.  Movement of curtains in situ is not seen as a fault in either the fabric or the making up and any alterations may be chargeable. Movement in situ  cannot be accepted as a fault in the fabric and claims will not be accepted.

Most fabrics are dyed and therefore each batch can vary slightly in shade. Due to colour variations between product batches, we cannot guarantee shade matching for previous orders, in addition the sample dispatched to you may also be slightly different in shade to the eventual order received. Due to the print design of some pattern fabrics it may be, that the sample dispatched does not show the full range of colours or pattern design.

CLEANING AND CARE
To maintain the appearance of your high quality textiles the correct care procedure is essential.
Remove hooks, rings and trims before cleaning
Use a good quality lining and/or interlining to help against fading
Swap curtains occasionally from one side of the track to the other to avoid having one edge constantly exposed to sunlight.
Keep your curtains and blinds dust free by regular gentle vacuuming.
Be aware that curtains can shrink when dry cleaned.  We do not recommend washing curtains or blinds.
Make sure your curtains are sufficiently full to allow for re-edging if the fabric does fade.
